Bed Races on Beacon

Sunday August 26, 2018 from 1pm – 3pm.

Beacon Avenue, between 5th and 3rd Street.

Join us in raising funds for Sidney’s Peninsula Youth Clinic at this high-octane, fun-packed afternoon for all the family! Twelve teams of 5 racers (4 pushing, 1 in the bed) will race in heats to find the fastest hospital bed on the Peninsula! We will be encouraging costumes, friendly-rivalry and big displays of team spirit for this community event. Watch this page as we’ll be announcing the teams soon. You’ll be able to make a pledge to your favourite team and help the Foundation support the newly opened Peninsula Medical Youth Health Clinic in Sidney.

On the day we need big crowds to cheer on the racers. Beacon Avenue will be closed between 5th and 3rd streets to allow spectators, the judging table and room for a Family Fun Zone and food available to purchase. We expect a full festival atmosphere and look forward to seeing you there supporting your favourite team!

Information for Teams

If you are a first timer to this kind-of event, let us share with you a few words of advice. First, dress up in costume. Not only does it add to the fun and team spirit, there is a prize for being the best dressed team!!  Victoria Costumes in Brentwood Bay is offering each registered team a 25% discount on costumes NOTE: Appointments are required, call in advance to avoid disappointment!

Watch out for 100.3 The Q’s ‘Sheet Heads’.  This seasoned bed race team has a lot of experience in the history of bed races and the rumor is they are practicing weekly in the lane behind their building. We have also heard that each team member has been going to Hot Yoga classes to get limbered up before the August 26th races!

Each team will run at least twice. This is a physically challenging event so keep this in mind and let prospective team members know. Each registered team must have a minimum of 5, maximum of 10, members (one will ride on top of the bed and four will push a REAL hospital bed one block down Beacon Avenue). Two teams compete at a time and race to reach the finish line in the shortest possible time to beat their opponent. Additional team members can be your cheerleaders and can work the crowd to generate support for the ‘Team Spirit’ award that will selected by our panel of esteemed judges the day of the event! Or, extra team members can participate in the second qualifying heat.

Safety First

Bed Race rules require that

  • every team member is over the age of 19,
  • every team member wears appropriate footwear suitable for running,
  • every team member wears a CSA approved helmet, and
  • every team member signs a waiver the day of the event.

Fundraising

We encourage teams to fundraise their registration cost, plus more! To help we will have online fundraising pages available for each team – easy to share with friends and family by email or social media. When you register your team we will ask you to complete a team profile, this will give you an opportunity to be creative and dream up some interesting facts about members on your team that you would like the event emcee to share with the many onlookers during the afternoon’s frivolities!  We will also use it to create your team’s online fundraising page. All donations made will receive a charitable tax receipt, and you will be able to view and share your fundraising total right up to the event.

The day of the bed races

ALL team members need to sign-in at the registration table by 12:30pm. Then our volunteers will organize each team for the Costume Parade which starts at 1:00pm. After the Costume Parade, Teams will be staged for their first qualifying heat.

The Youth Clinic operates at Sidney’s Peninsula Medical on Thursday nights from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, providing a Walk-In Health Clinic for youth aged 12 – 24 years old.  The model, which involves family physicians, mental health counsellors, and a child psychiatrist, is a collaboration between many partners, including the Ministry of Child & Family Development, the Foundry Victoria, School District 63, Sidney by the Sea Rotary, Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, and several community members.  A team of physicians offer their services after their own clinic hours, and a dedicated team of local youth volunteers have been helping to build and maintain a ‘youth friendly environment’ since the clinic was started. The youth clinic was started as a pilot project in the summer of 2017 and relaunched in March 2018 with the goal of making it an ongoing service to youth on the peninsula.  It operates as a full-service health clinic where young people can be seen in a youth friendly environment for any health concern: physical, sexual or mental health.
